Nine Bedroom Design Mistakes To Avoid
One of the most important spaces in our home is the bedroom. We spend approximately one-third of our lives in our bedroom (hopefully). Our bedrooms are our sanctuaries and they should be both functional and stylish. Below are some common mistakes when decorating your bedroom, along with some easy fixes if you need to change things up.
Don’t: Overcrowd the Space
Do: Resist the urge to buy too many pieces of furniture and don’t over accessorize. Your bed should be the main focus of your space.
Don’t: Be too Matchy-Matchy
Do: Avoid buying a complete furniture set. Avoid buying a bed-in-a-bag, too. Mixing textures and tones in your furniture is always a good idea. When purchasing bedding, patterns and textures will add personality to your space. You should also mix the sizes of your throw pillows for added visual interest.
Don’t: Skimp on Lighting
Do: Use a dimmer switch on your overhead light. Lighting is key in your bedroom, but your overhead light doesn’t need to be overly bright. A beautiful chandelier will make a statement. Bedside lamps or wall mounted lights are key and should be bright enough that you can read in bed and they can also be turned down to a mood light. Three way bulbs work great for this application.
Don’t: Minimalize on Window Treatments
Do: Use some form of blackout treatment in your sleeping room(s). Ensuring a good night’s rest can start with proper window treatments. These can be a room darkening blinds, shades or curtains.
Don’t: Use Bold Colors
Do: Embrace a softer approach, as this is ideal for relaxation, peacefulness and rest.
Don’t: Throw Your Bedding and Pillows on the Floor
Do: Add a reading chair in a corner or a bench at the end of your bed. All bedrooms should have a place to sit other than the bed. Chairs and benches can double as a place to hold your decorative pillows and bedding when you’re ready to retire.
Don’t: Underestimate the Need for a Rug
Do: Add a rug under your bed. It will soften sounds and feels nice under your feet. Ensure the rug size is appropriate for the room and bed. Rule of Thumb: Your rug should extend at least 18-24 inches from the sides and foot of the bed.
Don’t: Let your Television to be a Focal Point
Do: You don’t have to completely forego a tv in your bedroom but it shouldn’t be the first thing you see. It should disappear when not in use. Using something like a Frame TV is perfect, because when it’s not in use it looks like a piece of art. If you’re not ready for a new tv, housing it in a piece of furniture like a wardrobe cabinet is the next best thing because it can be hidden behind doors when you’re not watching it.
Don’t: Forget to Measure Before Buying Nightstands
Do: Beds aren’t all the same height and neither are nightstands. For your comfort and ease of reaching things during the night, your nightstands should be equal height or vary within only a few inches of your bed.
